The Balsam Fir is a coniferous tree in the pine family originated from north eastern north america. They tend to grow in colder climates with moist soils which are found in the Québec southern region. It has been the most popular tree to be used as christmas trees for several reasons. The fragrance of its needles is greatly loved and its needles tend to hold on to the branches for a long time after being cut. It's naturaly conical shape is enhanced with the proper care while growing to give an even and full looking tree.

Needle & Branch Description

The Balsam fir features a distinctive needle profile that sets it apart from other festive conifers:

  • Needle Length: Typically ¾" to 1¼"—slightly longer than Fraser fir needles.
  • Needle Arrangement: Needles are arranged mostly in two horizontal rows, which creates a flat, feathered branch appearance.
  • Needle Texture: Very soft and flexible, safe for children and pets.
  • Needle Color: Dark, deep green on top with lighter, subtle silver bands underneath.
  • Branch Structure: Medium strength—ideal for regular ornaments, though not as strong as Fraser fir branches.

The Balsam’s softness and vibrant color make it a favorite for households seeking a traditional tree with a strong visual and aromatic presence.

How Long a Balsam Fir Will Last

With proper care, a Balsam fir typically stays fresh for:

  • 3 to 4 weeks indoors
  • Excellent fragrance retention throughout the season
  • Needles remain soft even as the tree begins to dry

If placed too close to heat, its needle retention shortens, so optimal placement extends longevity significantly.

To maximize the lifespan and freshness of a christmas tree, proper care is essential.

1. Fresh Cut on the Trunk

Before placing the tree in its stand, cut ½ – 1 inch off the base to reopen the resin‑sealed vascular system.

2. Hydration Is Critical
  • Use a stand with 1 gallon (4 L) or more water capacity.
  • Fill immediately after cutting.
  • Maintain the water level above the cut at all times. Never let it run dry.

Christmas trees, especially freshly cut ones, will drink heavily in the first several days.

3. Placement in the Home
  • Keep the tree away from heat vents, fireplaces, radiators, and sunny windows.
  • Humidifiers can significantly improve needle retention.
4. Additives Not Required

Plain water is the most effective choice—no additives necessary.
